Guy de Maupassant
In the American Art Museum in Normandy, there hangs a lot of artwork done by the americans who had gone to study there at the end of the 19th Century. Guy de Maupassant's parents had a great amount of influence on his work. His father was an amateur painter while his mother has extremely strong willed. She smoked, rode horses, and even wore skirts that showed her ankles. No matter that, she is the reason that Maupassant's love for writing grew. His mentor, Gustave Flaubert, had been introduced to him by his mother. After he had been tutored through his 13th birthday by his mother, he entered a seminary, then later quit to enter the Franco-Prussian war. All throughout this he continued to write several famous stories including: The Necklace and Two Friends. He later died of a mental illness in 1893.

He had gone to medical school and had gotten his degree, however he soon gave this up for writing. He spent a lot of time writing comical plays such as: Uncle Vanya and The Three Sisters. He even married an actress from his play The Sea Gull. He continued to help out poor people, by providing famine relief and free medical help to those in need. He died of tuberculosis in 1904.
