Charles Dickens is a famous British author born in Portsmouth, England in 1812. During that time Portsmouth was home to a lot of military action because Britain was at war with France. Dickens was born second of eight children to parents who dreamed big, but never made it big. Later when his parents debt had grown so big that his father was imprisoned, Charles had to work at a boot-blackening factory. This feeling of abandonment later reappeared in several of his works. Later, once his father was out of prison, Charles was able to go back to school. This did not last long, however, before he had to drop out again and get an office job to help support his family once more. This office job was a major starting point for his writing though. He was later working for several large London newspapers, one of which caught his future wife's eye, Catherine Hogarth. They later divorced in 1858 after they had had ten children. Several of Dicken's famous works include: Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, and A Tale of Two Cities.
